This summer will be very different from past summers—and that’s okay. Change is known as a catalyst for growth. Let’s make the most of this time. Instead of creating yet another ‘summer essential’ shopping list of things you don’t really need, we’ve decided to round up our favorite summer health-boosting foods. Let’s challenge ourselves to get present, be mindful and take control of our health and happiness.
It’s no secret that a diet of processed foods and refined carbohydrates isn’t good for you… or your skin. A poor diet can lead to inflammation, sluggishness and disease. Not to mention tired-looking skin, wrinkles and blemishes. For us girls who don’t like to pack on the make-up, that’s a major problem, which is why we value our clean foods as much as our clean skincare.
These are just few foods to add to your farmer’s market shopping list to help your beauty shine through this summer:
Bell peppers of all colors are packed with carotenoids to protect your skin against free radicals. One study shows that, “after comparison of the dermal roughness with the concentration of carotenoid lycopene in the skin, a clear correlation was found showing that individuals with a high lycopene concentration in their skin exhibited less dermal roughness.” Also stating that a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants including carotenoids, could serve as the best preventive strategy against skin aging.
While strawberries are known for their delicious sweetness, they have also been proved to reduce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, which can contribute to aging. It may also play a role in development of a range of health conditions, including diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Although, the body naturally produces antioxidants to counteract these free radicals, you can also supercharge the fight by eating a diet rich in antioxidants.
Ahhh, the summer classic. Watermelon is a refreshing source of vitamin C, the nutrient that is essential for collagen synthesis. Collagen keeps your skin hydrated and luminous. Watermelon also contains lycopene and beta-carotene. One study found that lycopene and beta-carotene can protect the skin against sunburn. Beta-carotene is also known to prevent certain skin conditions like psoriasis and vitiligo. The vitamin A in watermelon is another important nutrient that contributes to skin health – it repairs and creates new skin cells. As if we needed more reasons to love watermelon during summertime!
Please note that eating certain foods won’t fix your skin or health overnight, maintaining a health-oriented, balanced lifestyle is the best way to see improvement. Consistently eating real, wholesome food and using clean, non-toxic personal care and beauty products is the way to go. To kick off summer and reset your skin for maximum glow, we’ve curated our Sunny Days Prep Set. (And while we might be biased, we still have to say it… THIS SET IS THE ULTIMATE SUMMER SKIN ESSENTIAL!)
As always, we wish you a beautiful and glowing day!
